Munich Bontanical Garden

 
I do not live far away from Munich (and my office is there too) and I think it would be nice to let you know about some lovely spaces every now and then. If you already seen the tourist stuff and want to move on these spots are the perfect next level! Let’s start with a real treasure - the Botanical Garden. Hidden behind the well known Castle of Nymphenburg with its huge park and broad lawns you’ll find the Botanical Garden. It’s like you enter a new world with patches full of plants stretching into narrow paths. Somewhat enchanted and the air filled with the scent of strange flowers – it’s absolutely lovely! I’ve been there a couple of days ago when the weather was not very much summerly. And believe me - even on a bit rainy day it’s very lovely. Be sure to check it out next time you stay in Munich!

Day Trip - Rothenburg Ob Der Tauber

Christmas was just over but we felt like we need some more kitsch and glitter. And so our way home from parents and parents-in-law took us to Rothenburg. Like many of my friends I have not been to most of the famous tourist attractions of our country (e.g. Schloss Neuschwanstein). And so this was my first time in Rothenburg too. Although late December and January is supposed to be out of season you could see hundreds of (Japanese, Chinese, American and of course Italian) tourists around in the streets and its still quite packed. Nevertheless it is a beautiful medieval village with lots of half-timbered houses and you'll feel like in a historic movie. So if you're in the modd for some kitsch too - take a day off and travel to Rothenburg. Skip the christmas museum (too much kitsch!), go see the iron maiden and at the criminal museum and have a "Schneeballen" (= snowball, a cake - see picture below), then you're ready for real life again :)

Hiking - Enchanted Forest

A walk through the forest in fall was just the perfect little getaway from our construction site at home. I love this warm golden glow you'll only get to see around this time of the year.

Ich bin einfach ein Herbstkind! Besonders die bunten Blätter haben es mir angetan. Also weg von der Baustelle und auf zu einer kleinen Wanderung durch den schönen Herbstwald. Wunderbares goldenes Licht und ein wenig Boden auf dem Nebel, zauberhaft! Sogar drei Rehen und anderen, kleineren Waldbewohnern sind wir begegnet...

Oktoberfest 2011

This year I spent only one day at the Oktoberfest - the weather was simply gorgeous and we had lots of fun (thanks to my lovely company that day).

Dieses Jahr war ich nur einmal auf dem Oktoberfest - wundervolles Wetter und (dank meiner netten Gesellschaft) ein großer Spaß :)

City Travel - Venice

Those of you who follow me on twitter may remember that I wrote I was on the way to a short break. Actually we made a quite spontaneous trip to Italy. We drove to the upper adriatic coast, just about 6-7 hours by car and there was sun,  beach and lots of good food.  What elso do you need to relax? We decided to spent one day in Venice - what can I say, it was very lovely! I've been there before but I was quite a nightmare: Hot and sticky, stuffed with tourists (okay that's inevitable) and expensive. I'm not a Venice-expert, but this is what I can recommend, if you like to travel there: This time it was much better! We decided to go an day that was supposed to be rainy (but it became sunny by noon). So there were less people in the streets. Then we decided to walk around in the northestern part - very lovely, only few tourists and affordable cafés around.

Diejenigen unter Euch, die mir auf Twitter folgen, haben vermutlich mitbekommen, dass ich einen kurzen Urlaub eingelegt habe. Ziemlich spontan habe wir eine Woche Italien gebucht. Es ging an die obere Adria - knapp 7 Stunden Fahrt und wir hatten Sonne satt, Sandstrand und leckeres Essen! Perfektes Entspannungsprogramm! Einen Tag wollten wir dann nach Venedig - und es war wunderbar! Ich war schon früher mal in Venedig, aber dmals war es einfach furchtbar - heiß und stickig, Tausende von Touristen und wahnsinnig teuer. Okay, das konnte man alles erwarten, es war trotzden eher unschön. Ich bin zwar weit davon entfernt ein Venedig-Kenner zu sein, aber diesmal war es viel besser: Zuerst haben wir einen Tag ausgesucht, für den Regen angekündigt war (ab Mittag wurde es dann toll sonnig), dann haben wir unsere Spaziergänge in den Nordosten der Lagungenstadt verlegt, also so weit weg von San Marco und Rialto wie möglich. Und es würde wirklich schön! Vergleichsweise wenig Touristen und sogar bezahlbare Cafés und Bars. So macht Venedig Spaß!

Hiking - Karlstal Canyon

I spent the last few days at my parents and parents-in law. They still live in the region where we grew up - the (south) western part of Rhineland-Palatinate, not far away from the French border. It was very hot and humid but we wanted to go for a little hike in the nearby forest. I remembered the beautiful Karlstal canyon - and it was just the perfect spot on this hot day!
So if you ever come to the Kaiserslautern area (the U.S. military base Ramstein is very close!) and look for a lovely piece of nature you won't be disappointed! The Karlstal is a canyon along the small river "Moosalb" of about 3km length. There is a small trail with many wooden bridges along the river in the. It's an easy hike, even with little children. Perfect to cool down on a hot summer's day!

Die letzten Tage haben wir bei meinen Eltern bzw. Schwiegereltern verbracht. Sie leben in der Region in der ich auch aufgewachsen bin - im (süd-) westlichen Rheinland-Pfalz, nicht weit weg von der französischen Grenze. Montags war es unglaublich heiß und schwül, aber wir wollten raus - und da fiel mir das Karlstal ein, eine kleine Schlucht im Pfälzerwald.
Also falls es Euch einmal in die Gegend um Kaiserslautern verschlägt und Ihr ein wirklich schönes Fleckchen Natur kennenlernen wollt, dann werden Ihr hier nicht enttäuscht! Das Karslstal ist eine etwa 3km lange Schlucht entlang dem Flüßchen Moosalb mitten durch einen naturbelassenen Laub. Man wandert auf einem schmalen Pfad entlang des Flüßchens über einige Holzbrücken. Die Strecke ist nicht schwer, sogar mit kleinen Kindern und Flip-Flops zu schaffen. Und es war genau das Richtige bei diesem Wetter!

Summer Vacation - Netherlands

So here's the reason for my little blogging absence lately - I've been on vacation :) I spent a good week in the Netherlands, on the coast of the "Eemmeer" making half-day-trips to the countryside and two days in Amsterdam. The weather was quite bad but best thing - I spent lots of quality time with my little family. Sleeping until late, swimming, long walks on the seaside, reading and watching movies on DVD in the evenings - just perfect. Now I feel relaxed and comfortable back home. And I got to get back to Amsterdam once again - it was my first time there and it was lovely!

Ich war auf Kurzurlaub in den Niederlanden, daher auch meine spärlichen Posts in der letzten Zeit. Zuerst ein paar Tage am Eemmeer, einem der niederländischen Binnenmeere. Von dort aus sind wir ein wenig herumgefahren und waren anschließend 2 Tage in Amsterdam. Das Wetter war leider ziemlich mies, Regen gab's jeden Tag in Mengen - aber ich habe eine schöne intensive Zeit mit meiner kleinen Familie verbracht. Lang ausschlafen, schwimmen, lange Spaziergänge auf dem Deich, viel lesen und abends DVDs schauen - also einfach perfekt. Und jetzt bin ich entspannt und gut gelaunt wieder zuhause. Nach Amsterdam will ich unbedingt nochmal länger (auch zum shoppen, denn das gabs in dem Urlaub gar nicht).

Places, I'd like to travel to

1. Amsterdam - Maybe the destination of our next city trip.
2. East Coast of the U.S. - I want to see the indian summer.
3. Rome - I still haven't been to the capital of Italy, although I travelled to Italy several times in the past.
4. South-East Asia, especially Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand - I hope to get there when the kid's are a little older!
5. Hawaii - To hit the waves on Waikiki beach, have a cocktail in a tikki mug and wear a flower lei, that would be my kind of beach holidays!

Orte, die ich (in der näheren Zukunft) bereisen möchte

1. Amsterdam - Vielleicht geht da unser nächster Städte-Trip dahin?
2. Die Ostküste der USA (cih war bisher nur in NYC) - Ich möchte am liebsten im Indian Summer dahin.
3. Rom - Ich war immer noch nicht in der italienischen Hauptstadt, obwohl wir schon oft in Italien geurlaubt haben.
4. Süd-Ost-Asien, besonders Vietnam, Kambodscha und Thailand - Hoffentlich wird da endlich was draus, wenn die Kids etwas größer sind.
5. Hawaii - Einmal Wellenreiten in Waikiki, dann ein Cocktail in einem lustigen Tikki-Becher und eine Blumenkette um den Hals - das wäre Strandurlaub nach meinem Geschmack!

Getaway

We booked our summer holidays - finally! I'm so in need of a proper vacation. That's the only thing you can't do spontaneous with a baby and a toddler. It's still some months ahead but now I have something I can hang on to. We'll be staying at the seaside and hope to include a city trip as well. Curious?

Endlich haben wir unseren Sommerurlaub gebucht - denn Urlaub hat mir auch schon wirklich gefehlt! Richtig spontan verreisen kann man kaum mit Baby und Kleinkind. Es ist zwar noch einige Zeit hin, aber ich habe wieder etwas auf das ich mich freuen kann. Vorerst nur soviel: Es geht ans Meer und vielleicht könne wir noch einen Städtetrip mit reinpacken. Neugierig?
